— OUTLAW, KILLER, ACTOR — Under a barrage of withering gunfire, members of the Doolin-Dalton Gang ran from Ransom’s Saloon in Ingalls, Oklahoma, to the livery stable next door to get their horses and escape a posse of Deputy U.S. Marshals.

The sound of a train whistle alerted several armed men waiting on horseback at Grants Station, New Mexico. Their leader, William E. Walters – known mostly by the name Bronco Billy – slid the revolver from his holster. The others did the same.
A combination of good planning and good luck had carried the Bronco BIlly Gang to a string of successful train robberies, and Walters figured this holdup should be no different.
